October 7th is the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s death. I dedicate this post in his honor, since I did not truly appreciate his genius when I was forced to read his work in high school.
I actually do remember reading Edgar Allan Poe in high school, and even remember some of the famous lines from his work. Quoth the raven, “Nevermore.” I’m sure I would remember and have appreciated him more if I had studied his writing by watching the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy performance while sipping a matching cocktail.,,. Okay, a mocktail since I was in high school!
Facebook has my algorithm locked in. It knows what I like, and it taunts me with it. When the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy Experience notified me that it was coming to Traverse City, I immediately texted Chuck. I asked, “Are you interested in going to this with me?” His response “” was crickets because that’s what he does when he wants to avoid disappointing someone. I call it “getting chucked!”
No response meant that I was free to ask my Beach Babes group if they would like to go. Actually I think it was more like, “Who’s going with me?!?” Immediately, responses started rolling in. We made plans for the earlier show, because the other shows were sold out and this allowed for dinner after for those that would be driving home that night.

Unfamiliar with the Poe Speakeasy? Here’s a brief rundown. The evening starts with a cocktail: The Pale Blue Eye. Then you are gifted with an amazing performance of epic Poe-portions. Hint: the cocktails match the work being performed. The second cocktail was: Edgar’s Twisted Brandy Milk Punch paired with another amazing performance. Third was the Nevermore cocktail. Bet you can’t guess which Poe work that cocktail paired with! Finally, we were treated to the Cocktail of Red Death. Every Poe-formance was given by a different actor and they were all great!

Before the event a HUGE topic of discussion was about what we should wear. Research provided some information. Most people recommended dressing in gothic, cocktail attire, the 20s era, or all black. Honestly, most people did aPOEpriately (sorry, I can’t stop!) dress in theme, but there were a few people dressed casually in jeans. I think it was fun to dress up!
I really only have one teeny tiny complaint about the evening. I know four cocktails seems like very little, but when quickly consumed in a little more than an hour, and proPOEtionally mixed, this is a recipe for disaster for lightweights (like myself) who haven’t eaten. Just saying.
Overall I would rate the Poe Speakeasy Experience a 9.5/10. We had a wonderful time, and because we are responsible adults, Uber provided our transPOEtation to and from the venue.
