Mmmmmm….donuts. Is there nothing they can’t do? – Homer Simpson

The weather has been chilly and rainy. Except for my daily walks with Birkenstock, I’ve spent most of the early days of my summer vacation inside. Although I’ve put a dent in my to-do list, it’s sort of depressing when I think about it being the end of June already, and I haven’t been to the beach once!
I decided to turn my frown upside down and head out on a mini-road trip to Conley’s Bakery in Mecosta. I heard that they have amazing donuts and customer service and wanted to experience the deliciousness for myself. Who isn’t happy when they are eating a really GOOD donut?
When I was younger, my Aunt Geri worked in a local grocery store’s bakery. This was in the late 70s, early 80s, when the baking was done in-house and fresh donuts were FRESH donuts. Once in a while, she would bring home a glazed twist, and the pastry, combined with the glaze and a slight bit of cinnamon, would practically melt in your mouth. The standard for donut perfection was set back then. The pastry must be light and fluffy, with a slight crisp to the outside from the fryer. The glaze must be sugary, so sugary that your mouth waters for more and your teeth are on the verge of a toothache.
I mean, what’s the point of a treat if it isn’t really a TREAT to eat?
I loaded myself into my car, plugged the Conley coordinates into Google Maps, cued my audiobook, and headed out. The drive took just over an hour. Considering the looming holiday, the traffic was good, and I was able to relax and enjoy my audiobook (Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter).
It’s summer break so I slept in a bit before I headed to Conley’s. That was a mistake! The donut case was scavenged by the time I arrived around 10:30 a.m. This is a good sign, obviously people love their donuts. However, it was bad for me because the guy ahead of me in line took all of the chocolate cinnamon rolls, and I had to “settle” for the vanilla.
This is what the case looked like for the early-risers:

The customer service was excellent. Quick, efficient, and friendly. The store was clean and there were plenty of tables to sit at while you eat. I chose to hide in my car as I scarfed down my donut and Diet Coke (yes, I know, ironic).
My car donut was delicious. A slight crisp to the outside. Light fluffy pastry. The frosting was vanilla, not cream cheese (I do NOT like cream cheese frosting), and just enough. The center of the cinnamon roll, the best part if you ask me, was gooey and cinnamon-y just like it should be. Well worth the trip and the calories! Although, I think I will try to drag myself out of bed a bit earlier next time so that I can be sure to snag a chocolate cinnamon roll.

Essentials for a donut-seeking road trip:
I like to listen to audiobooks while driving, and for this trip I selected a psychological thriller called Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter. This book is so good that I am listening to it every chance that I get and getting nothing else done. It is FREE on Kindle Unlimited. Here’s the link: https://amzn.to/4uYpm2M
