Swarming the Globe

i do sweat…a lot

Looking for a fun shimmery workout? Try line dancing!

I have another confession to make (July must be my confession month): I don’t like country music. Maybe it was the hours, upon hours, upon hours of George Strait, Ricky Skaggs, and Kenny Rogers songs forced upon me while riding in the car between Alpena and Monroe. My mom and stepdad were singing at the top of their lungs along with the songs. It was torture! There were no noise-cancelling AirPods in the 1900s, people! The speed limit was only 55 mph back then, the traffic was bumper-to-bumper, and that trip took f-o-r-e-v-e-r!

My point is this. Country music makes me cranky.

When Bowright Whiskey, in Lake City, MI, posted that they were hosting a Line Dancing with Kay event in June, I was reluctant. I, like many other people, associate line dancing with country music. Country music is to line dancing as thrash metal is to mosh pitting in my mind.

I have been searching for ways to move my body more (perimenopause requires it) and to step outside my comfort zone. So, I texted my friend group chat and invited everyone to join in the fun.

And it was fun! I was pleasantly surprised to learn that line dancing is NOT synonymous with country music. Kay mixed in some Prince, Michael Jackson, Meghan Trainor, and more!

Keeping it real, I had tons of fun, but I am more of a free-form dancer, not a let’s-all-dance-in-unison-as-a-group dancer. Luckily, Kay is a wonderful teacher. She demonstrates the dance step-by-step (literally) first, then she walks the group slowly through the dance, and finally we dance the dance (to two different songs). It was easy for those with good memories and rhythm, but for some of us it was a bit more of a challenge.

If you’re looking for a fun way to get your “steps” in, join the Line Dancing with Kay crew at Bowright Whiskey Company this Wednesday, July 15th at 6:30 (until 8). While you’re there try a tasty beverage and snack as well.

It is the duty of the current generation to abhor the music of the previous generation… its just one aspect of “how to leave the nest”. ;-)
