The nice thing about taking a painting class is that you’re all beginners there to learn. Nobody actually expects you to be a great painter. Which is good because I’m not even a good painter. I’m just here for the relaxation and camaraderie.

Relaxation and camaraderie are in abundance at the Up North Arts Capture the Joy of Watercolor Painting outdoor class. The three-hour class, taught by Julie Raabe Gentry, was held in the beautiful Cadillac Sound Garden. The flowers were vibrant (thank you to the Cadillac Garden Club), and the garden area was busy with visitors, but a peaceful place to get yourself into the painting zone.

Something about being creative outside appeals to me. Maybe it’s because we really don’t have many days to get out and enjoy nice weather here in Northern Michigan. Maybe it’s because the scenery is so inspiring. I don’t know exactly what draws me in, but it does, and I like it.

Julie provided thorough instruction and all the supplies we needed for watercolor painting. Demonstrating techniques first and then allowing students plenty of time to create. She is a very supportive and encouraging teacher.

The students in this class were of varying ages, and creative levels. Everyone was nice, welcoming, and willing to demonstrate their techniques when asked. The sun was sunshiny and so were the personalities.

As I mentioned, I am not taking ANY art classes to get good enough to sell my art. I’m simply taking the classes to try something new (typically outside of my comfort zone), meet and chat with like-minded people, fill my empty-nest time, and find new ways to: Relax, Reflect & Refresh.

I think I’ve found that in Plein Air (outdoor) Watercolor painting. You only need a few supplies (see below), sunscreen, and a cozy spot to get started. Get outside and enjoy this sunshine while you can Michiganders! The winters are soooooo long.
